1. Application Process

IML Labels (In‑Mold Labeling) – The label is placed into the injection mold cavity before the plastic is injected. During molding, the molten plastic fuses with the label, creating a permanent, seamless bond. The decoration becomes an integral part of the product surface.

Heat Transfer Film – The film is applied after the plastic product has been molded. Using a heat transfer machine, heat and pressure are applied to transfer the design from a PET carrier film onto the finished product surface. The film does not become part of the plastic structure; instead, it adheres to the surface via a hot‑melt adhesive layer.

2. Durability and Performance

IML Labels – Because the label fuses with the plastic during molding, the decoration is permanent, peel‑proof, and highly scratch‑resistant. It withstands chemicals, moisture, and repeated washing without fading or delaminating. Ideal for products that require long‑term durability, such as paint buckets, food containers, and household items.

Heat Transfer Film – The transferred graphics are durable and scratch‑resistant, but they remain a surface‑applied layer. While they offer good resistance to abrasion and chemicals, they are more susceptible to peeling or damage under extreme conditions or rough handling compared to IML labels.

3. Substrate Compatibility

IML Labels – Primarily used with thermoplastic materials such as PP, PE, and PET during the injection molding process. The label material (usually OPP or PP) must be compatible with the base plastic to achieve proper fusion.

Heat Transfer Film – Suitable for a wider range of substrates, including PP, PE, ABS, PVC, wood, and coated surfaces. It can be applied to both rigid and flexible plastic products, making it more versatile for after‑market decoration.

4. Production Efficiency and Cost

IML Labels – Decoration occurs during the injection cycle, eliminating post‑molding labeling steps. This reduces labor and handling costs for high‑volume production. However, it requires specialized injection molding equipment and precise label placement systems (manual or robotic), making initial setup more expensive.

Heat Transfer Film – Decoration is a separate process after molding. It is highly efficient for small to medium volumes and does not require mold modification. The equipment (heat transfer machine) is generally lower in cost and easier to set up, making it more accessible for smaller production runs or custom designs.
