The Injection Molding Process of IML Labels

In‑mold labeling (IML) has revolutionized plastic decoration by integrating label application directly into the injection molding cycle. The process is efficient, precise, and produces durable, high‑quality finished parts. Below, we break down the IML injection molding process into two essential phases.

Part 1: Label Placement and Mold Preparation

The process begins before any plastic is injected. A pre‑printed IML label – typically made of OPP or PP film – is cut to the required shape and loaded into the mold cavity. This is done either manually by an operator or automatically by a robotic arm equipped with a vacuum or electrostatic gripper. To ensure the label stays in place during injection, a static charger is often used to apply a controlled electrostatic charge to the label. This temporary adhesion holds the label firmly against the cavity wall, preventing it from shifting or wrinkling when the molten plastic enters. The mold is then closed, ready for the next stage.

Part 2: Injection, Fusion, and Cooling

With the label securely positioned, the injection molding machine injects molten plastic (usually PP or PE) into the closed mold cavity. The heat and pressure of the molten plastic activate the label’s adhesive or melt its backing layer, causing the label to fuse permanently with the surface of the molded part. At the same time, the plastic takes the shape of the cavity, embedding the label seamlessly into the final product. After a brief cooling phase, the mold opens, and the finished item – now with a fully integrated, peel‑proof, and scratch‑resistant decoration – is ejected. The entire cycle typically takes only a few seconds, making IML ideal for high‑volume production of items such as paint buckets, cups, food containers, and household goods.
