Production process
1. Making the Cylinder (Gravure Engraving)
Design Preparation: The desired pattern or artwork is digitally designed and prepared for engraving. Cylinder Engraving: A metal (usually copper or chrome-plated) cylinder is laser-engraved with the design, creating microscopic cells that will hold ink.
2. Printing (Gravure Printing)
Ink Application: The engraved cylinder rotates through an ink reservoir, picking up ink in its engraved cells.
Excess Ink Removal: A doctor blade scrapes off excess ink, leaving ink only in the engraved cells. Film Transfer:The cylinder presses against the PET or PP film, transferring the ink in the desired pattern.
3. Drying (Hot Air or UV Curing)
Hot Air Drying: The printed film passes through a drying tunnel where heated air evaporates solvents, ensuring the ink sets properly.
UV Curing (for UV inks): Some films use UV-curable inks, which dry instantly under ultraviolet light for faster production.
4. Cutting (Slitting & Sheeting)
Slitting (Roll Form): If the film is produced in large rolls, a slitting machine cuts it into narrower rolls of the required width.
5. Quality Inspection (QC)
Visual Check: Operators inspect for defects such as misprints, scratches, or uneven ink distribution.
Adhesion Test: A sample is heat-pressed onto a substrate (e.g., plastic barrel) to verify bonding strength.
Color Accuracy:Spectrophotometers ensure colors match the approved design.
Durability Testing: Some films undergo abrasion, chemical, or water-resistance tests.
6. Packaging
Roll Packaging: Films in roll form are wrapped in protective plastic, labeled, and boxed.
