    IML in mold label FAQ

    Q:What are the influencing factors of the cut size of the IML in mold label and how to measure it correctly?
    1) Mainly shrinkage. The label material and the shrinkage ratio of the injection molding machine will all affect the effect after injection molding. It is necessary to measure and test about the product material, label thickness and the shrinkage of the injection molding machine itself, and finally achieve the perfect effect, which can be completely seamless.
    2) Make the correct cut size according to the product. It is best if the customer can provide product samples, and then we can make the cut size based on the samples.

    Q:The reason why the IML label cannot be attached to the mold/Reasons for insufficient static electricity of IML labels:
    1) There is no static electricity added to the label when it leaves the factory. It is equipped with an static charger/electrostatic generator to add static electricity.
    2) The environment is humid and static electricity will run away during shipping. Equipped with an electrostatic device/static charger.
    3) If you cannot add static electricity using an electrostatic generator, it may be related to the material of the label. Contact us to confirm the reason.
    4) If it is manual injection molding, try using a wet rag and adding water.
    5) If it is a robot, it may be caused by static electricity removal at the factory.

    Q:The color of the IML label becomes darker after injection molding:
    1) The base color of the product is too dark, you can use two layers of white when designing.
    2) Thicken and deepen the white ink, or use high-concentration white.

    Q:The label color is different from the design file:
    1) The customer provides an electronic draft or sample label. After the customer confirms the color and size, the maximum difference between the produced label and the design file is 5%.
    2) Determine some spot color numbers according to the Pantone color card.

    Production process for IML labels:

    1. Cylinder Making (Gravure Plate Engraving)
    The process starts with engraving a gravure printing cylinder. The customer's custom design is laser‑etched onto a copper or chrome‑plated steel cylinder. The cylinder surface is engraved with microscopic cells that hold ink, corresponding to the exact pattern and colors. This master cylinder ensures high‑volume, consistent printing with sharp details and accurate color reproduction.

    2. Printing (Gravure Printing)
    The engraved cylinder is mounted on a gravure printing press. The cylinder rotates through an ink bath, filling the engraved cells with ink, while a doctor blade removes excess ink from the smooth surface. The cylinder then transfers the ink onto the 20‑micron OPP (or PP) film substrate. Multiple color stations build the design layer by layer, achieving high‑resolution, vivid graphics with excellent color saturation.

    3. Drying (Curing)
    After each ink layer is applied, the printed film passes through a heated drying tunnel. Hot air evaporates the solvents from the ink, curing it firmly onto the film surface. Complete drying is essential to prevent smudging, ink transfer, or blocking. For 20‑micron film, precise temperature control is critical to avoid curling, stretching, or distortion due to the thin material.

    4. Slitting (Cutting to Width)
    Once the master roll is fully dried, it is transferred to a slitting machine. The large roll is cut into narrower rolls of specific widths (e.g., 100mm, 120mm, 160mm) according to customer requirements.

    Precision slitting ensures clean, straight edges and accurate dimensions for easy handling and placement in injection molds. The thin 20‑micron film requires sharp blades and gentle tension to prevent tearing.

    5. Quality Inspection
    Each finished roll undergoes a thorough quality inspection. Key checks include: Color accuracy – compared against the approved color standard. Print clarity – no blurring, misregistration, or missing elements. Surface defects – no scratches, bubbles, stains, or contamination. Dimensional accuracy – width, length, and roll diameter are verified. Thickness tolerance – confirms the 20‑micron specification is maintained. Adhesion test – ensures the ink layer is properly cured. Any defective material is rejected or reworked to maintain consistent quality standards.

    6. Packaging
    After passing inspection, the IML label rolls are carefully packaged. Each roll is wrapped in protective film to prevent dust, scratches, and moisture damage during storage and transit. The rolls are then placed into sturdy cartons, with clear labeling indicating product specifications (size, design, batch number, and 20‑micron thickness). Desiccants may be added to control humidity, as thin films are sensitive to moisture.

    7. Shipping / Delivery
    Finally, the packaged cartons are loaded onto pallets, shrink‑wrapped, and dispatched to the customer. All necessary shipping documents – including packing list, commercial invoice, and any required certificates (e.g.,RoHS, REACH, food‑grade compliance) – are prepared to ensure smooth customs clearance and timely delivery.
