Q:What are the influencing factors of the cut size of the IML in mold label and how to measure it correctly?
1) Mainly shrinkage.The label material and the shrinkage ratio of the injection molding machine will all affect the effect after injection molding. It is necessary to measure and test about the product material, label thickness and the shrinkage of the injection molding machine itself, and finally achieve the perfect effect, which can be completely seamless.
2) Make the correct cut size according to the product. It is best if the customer can provide product samples, and then we can make the cut size based on the samples.
Q:The reason why the IML label cannot be attached to the mold/Reasons for insufficient static electricity of IML labels:
1) There is no static electricity added to the label when it leaves the factory. It is equipped with an static charger/electrostatic generator to add static electricity.
2) The environment is humid and static electricity will run away during shipping. Equipped with an electrostatic device/static charger.
3) If you cannot add static electricity using an electrostatic generator, it may be related to the material of the label. Contact us to confirm the reason.
4) If it is manual injection molding, try using a wet rag and adding water.
5) If it is a robot, it may be caused by static electricity removal at the factory.
Q:The color of the IML label becomes darker after injection molding:
1) The base color of the product is too dark, you can use two layers of white when designing.
2) Thicken and deepen the white ink, or use high-concentration white.
Q:The label color is different from the design file:
1) The customer provides an electronic draft or sample label. After the customer confirms the color and size, the maximum difference between the produced label and the design file is 5%.
2) Determine some spot color numbers according to the Pantone color card.
Production process
Production Process of Laminated IML Labels:
Laminated IML labels consist of a printed film layer bonded to a backing layer, providing enhanced stiffness, opacity, and durability for injection molding applications. The production process involves the following key steps:
1. Cylinder Making (Gravure Plate Engraving)
The customer’s design is engraved onto a gravure cylinder using laser or mechanical engraving. The cylinder surface is etched with tiny cells that hold ink, ensuring high-resolution, repeatable printing.
2. Printing
The engraved cylinder is mounted on a gravure printing press. Ink is transferred from the cylinder onto the OPP or PP film substrate through multiple color stations. This step builds the design layer by layer, achieving vivid colors and sharp details.
3. Drying
After each ink layer is printed, the film passes through a heated drying tunnel. Hot air evaporates solvents and cures the ink, preventing smudging and ensuring good adhesion. Complete drying is essential before the lamination step.
4. Lamination (Composite Bonding)
Once the printed film is fully dried, it is laminated with a secondary backing layer (typically a white or opaque PP film) using an adhesive or thermal bonding process. This composite structure provides opacity, stiffness, and improved handling during injection molding. The lamination is carried out under controlled temperature and pressure to achieve a strong, bubble-free bond.
5. Slitting / Die-Cutting
The laminated master roll is then slit into narrower rolls or die-cut into individual label shapes according to customer requirements. Precision cutting ensures clean edges and accurate dimensions for reliable placement in molds.
6. Quality Inspection
Each finished roll or batch undergoes thorough inspection. Key checks include color accuracy, print clarity, lamination integrity (no bubbles or delamination), dimensional accuracy, and adhesion strength. Defective material is rejected.
7. Packaging
Inspected rolls are wrapped in protective film to prevent dust and moisture damage, then packed into sturdy cartons with clear labeling for size, design, and batch number.
8. Shipping
Packaged goods are palletized, shrink-wrapped, and dispatched with the necessary shipping documents for timely delivery.
